thursday scratch
Written on Thursday evening, 14 March, and Saturday, 16 March 2013, this track leaves lots of room for the lyrics i never wrote. In fact, despite the carefully crafted, Stewart Copeland-inspired, no-kick-on-one drum beat, I never wrote lyrics for it, mostly because i was afraid to write the lyrics i really wanted to write...
Yes, the 12-string video stays too long. Yes, i had dyed my hair copper. Yes, that was white shag carpet (from Ikea, if you must know). The bass video is not of the keeper track. The googly eyes popped off the bass drum less than halfway through the song. And, yes, that is the actual price tag from Willcutt's for that purple Danelectro, which you hear played through a late '60s Fender Champ, double tracked, because that's how i roll.

A little instrumental something to break in the temporary studio in the living room. Written, recorded, mixed, mastered, and videoified on 13 July 2014.
And, and...

Jon Dittert and I got together on a Wednesday in April, with no material, just a plan to make something. "Pick a key..." About three hours later, this is the result, a piece that messes with your sense of timing. We both set up cameras, so there's a rare second angle on the drums, and some handheld camera work on the guitar.
Somebody That I Used To Know

Who doesn't love Power Ballads? Big reverb, plodding tempo, acoustic verses and electric choruses, screeching guitars, and melodramatic vocals. Here's a Power Ballad treatment of Gotye's 2012 hit, with a little help from Tessa on vocals.
The Real Me

The opener from The Who's "Quadrophenia", tracked all in one night, Friday, 11 Oct 2013. Very rough around the edges, but raw energy fits the song better, i think.
TD-11 Demo
Переглядів 38610 років тому
A quick tour of interesting sounds and capabilities of the Roland TD-11k electric drum set. I just dorked around on the kit, rather badly at times, with the camera and recorder running, and cut together some of the interesting bits. I didn't capture the choke capability on the crash cymbal, but that's kinda tricky to use, anyway.
Cop Drama

Theme song for an imaginary '70s cop drama. "Undercover cops and underworld informants, fighting crime and living large Cop Drama! Thursdays at 9, 10 Central!" Written 23 March 2013, recorded 30 March to 5 April 2013.
Oh, That Was Terrible
Переглядів 16911 років тому
I left the equipment running after tracking a song, and blew off a little steam by bashing the crap out of my drums. As it turns out, not only do the overheads pick up my voice rather well, i lose all sense of timing when singing while drumming. Derp. Poorly improvised Saturday afternoon, 16 March 2013.

Twins' Lullaby

This is a simple tune i wrote to soothe my twin daughters when they were babies, in 2004. I would play the chords and sing the melody, and they would calm down and watch, until either they fell asleep or i couldn't sing any more. Recorded 27 January 2013 as a multitrack guitar instrumental.

    what riff is that?

    • @ScottArrington
      @ScottArrington 2 місяці тому

      It's the main riff from an unfinished song from ages ago. The palm-muted chugs on the low E coincide with the kick drum, so it was great for practicing heel-toe pedal work since i only had the single kick pedal. I was going to make a video with it, but, well, Life Happened.

    Grind a groove out of the back edge under where the knobs are so it won't slide off your thigh, and while you're in the workshop saw the end of the bottom part of the V off behind the jack hole. The Flying V is a flawed design, you have to do a little bit of customization, now go, there's no time to waste, find the circular saw and the grinder, they're probably behind the Rubbermaid containers, probably fell back there. Don't forget to put the safety glasses on, could be a few chunks of plastic fly off when you go through the pick guard. Never mind the hot plastic smell, it'll clear. Now get on out there, go go go!

    this video was posted literally the day I turned 12 and didn´t even know guitars and bass guitars were different. Now I´m a few months from turning 22 and even if I don´t have a gibson, I do have a dean V shaped guitar, which I love to the death, and it´s literally the most comfortable guitar I´ve had so far

      It's close. His looks like a '67 style from the 80s with speed knobs and EMG pickups. Mine is a '67 "reissue" from 1990 (bought it new by mail order from AMS when i was in high school), with the wizard hat knobs, 590's mounted directly to the pick guard without rings, and unashamedly the best neck in the universe. My heroes at the time were Kirk and Randy Rhoads, so, yeah, of course. :-)

    What’s that red guitar you’re using in this video?

    • @ScottArrington
      @ScottArrington 6 років тому

      That's The Muppet, a heavily modified Bently Series 10 superstrat. I bought it new for $225, as my first electric guitar, in 1988. I replaced all the stock pickups with DiMarzios, added a coil-tap switch and completely re-wired it, replaced the stock tremolo with an actual Floyd Rose, and painted my own nickname over the headstock. The neck feels like a Charvel or Jackson -- it plays surprisingly well, all the more surprising because it was a "student-grade" guitar. Bonus fact -- I recorded it here through an '80s Peavey Audition Chorus (which i bought with the guitar) for extra 80's authenticity. :-)
